Write the World’s free global writing community is a place for 13-19 year old teens to share their writing, respond to prompts, and enter competitions – while receiving feedback from experts and peers. We believe that writing spaces for youths should feel open and secure. Creating that kind of trusted space requires careful planning, attention to detail, and ongoing care.
Every day on our site, young writers from around the world log on to share their work, read others’ writing, and connect with their peers. At the same time, we work to ensure that the environment supporting student writing remains safe, welcoming, and age-appropriate.
A Thoughtful Approach to Safety
From the beginning, Write the World has taken a research-informed approach to supporting teens online. We’ve developed our safety protocols in consultation with child psychologists, educators, and online safety experts. The result is an online community designed with the developmental needs of young people in mind, offering room for creativity and connection, alongside appropriate guardrails. Staff and volunteers complete background checks during the hiring process and take part in live training with our support team before beginning their work with young writers.
Moderation that Supports Growth
Writers on the site are expected to follow our Writing Guidelines, which are designed to encourage respectful conduct and prohibit explicit or gratuitous violence, references to self-harm, plagiarism, and the sharing of personal contact information. If these guidelines are not followed, we take a tiered response approach that often involves reaching out directly to the writer, offering additional support, and encouraging safer ways to express difficult ideas.
Published writing, peer reviews, and comments are reviewed by our moderation system, comprised of professional educators and writers working in tandem with an AI content recognition technology that helps flag potentially concerning content based on tone, context, and language. Any flagged content is reviewed by a human moderator before action is taken. This process helps us to maintain a safe space without limiting creative expression.
Data Privacy and Transparency
We know how important data privacy is to the families, schools, and organizations that use our platform. Write the World does not sell or rent user data. Our privacy policy and terms of service are publicly available, and we honor all requests to view, correct, or delete personal information. Further, the Write the World platform is architected with data security in mind. All user data is encrypted, and access is restricted via system policies. Our goal is to make sure writers feel safe sharing their words, knowing their identities and information are protected.
A Collaborative Effort
Keeping an online community safe, especially one designed for teenagers, requires continuous effort and collaboration. As a nonprofit, our priorities are shaped by our mission, and we invest in the tools, staffing, and systems that help us meet that mission every day.
To parents, educators, and supporters: thank you for trusting us. To our teen writers: thank you for helping us make this community what it is. We’re proud to support your voice, and we’re committed to making sure this platform continues to grow with you.
